Driven by Purpose
This year's theme, "Driven by Purpose," felt especially fitting for the milestone. Fifty years after biotechnology took root in California, the conversations at BIO 2026 kept circling back to the same question: how do we turn scientific breakthroughs into outcomes that actually reach patients - faster, safer, and at scale?
One image captured that spirit well: a race car in this year's BIO colors, parked on the exhibit floor as part of the event's "race for innovation" energy. It was a fitting metaphor for what we heard throughout the week - that speed and purpose don't have to be at odds, as long as the right team is in the driver's seat.
Scale and substance
BIO remains the largest gathering in the industry for a reason. Nearly 20,000 attendees - founders, investors, scientists, policymakers, and service providers from across the global biotech ecosystem - filled the San Diego Convention Center for four days of partnering meetings, panel sessions, and the kind of hallway conversations that often matter as much as the formal program. Topics ranged from AI-driven drug discovery to global market access strategy, reflecting an industry that's expanding in scope even as it stays anchored to its founding mission.
What we're taking away
For us, events like BIO are about the sessions and about the conversations happening around them - the chance to listen closely to what's actually keeping founders and boards up at night. This year, one theme kept surfacing across nearly every conversation we had: execution risk. However strong the science, it lives or dies on the strength of the team built to scale it.
